There's always anticipation and excitment in the air during the harvest. It's like the anticipation of a horse race. Early in the morning (I mean ear..l.l..y..y..y) the trucks are rumbling down the gravel roads sending dirt flying through my open windows more than 500 feet off the road. (note to self: close windows). The soft white wheat that comes to Spofford Station is stored in the large new grain elevator with the overflow piled for transportation. It is hauled by the GRAIN TRAIN down the Columbia River, through the system of dams and out the Port of Portland to Asia. Soft white wheat is noodle wheat.

Earth, Wind, Fire, Water...Terroir is the stuff that combines soil, sun, site and water. We are part farmer and part feng shui

My new favorite past time is hanging around on all the different cars.
While a small farm by American standards, we are busy getting in the last of the alfalfa hay, and preparing for the grape harvest. Crews are out color thinning the fruit, checking leaf and color levels for stress or vigor and working to assure that all that can be done is being done to produce the finest wine grapes. With the addition of our first farm to table events here on the farm, we are moving the cows between the pastures to keep the grasses perfect for the "common shoe." Check out our events being held monthly until the holidays.
